Abstract

An analysis of the fluid dynamics of injection mold filling has been presented with particular emphasis given to the use of potential flow theory and conformal mapping transformations. The conformal mapping approach is computationally simple by comparison with the analytical and numerical techniques previously described in the literature and can be applied to thin, symmetric mold cavities of arbitrary contour. The method can also be applied to asymmetric mold geometries in order to give approximate results for the mold filling behavior. The predictions obtained by means of conformal mapping are found to be in close agreement with both theoretical and experimental results previously reported in the literature. In addition, potential flow theory indicates that the melt front shape and flow pattern which develop during filling are independent of the nature of the fluid and are solely determined by the geometry of the mold cavity.
