Abstract

A novel oligosiloxane containing alternative ladderlike structure involving viologen groups has been prepared via donor-acceptor interaction-assisted template polymerization. The monomer used as the electron-donor component, N,N′-bis(3-methyldimethoxyl-silylpropyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium dihexafluorophosphate and its precursor, N,N′-bis(3-methyldimethoxyl-silylpropyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium dibromide were first synthesized successfully in high yield. This oligosiloxane, which displays interesting electrochromic properties, has been characterized by FTIR, UV-vis, 1HNMR, 29SiNMR, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vapour pressure osmometry (VPO).
