Synergetic effects of nonthermal plasma and catalysts on the removal process of VOC were studied. The removal rates of hydrocarbons with nonthermal plasma assisted by catalyst beads, which are Pt-alumina and ion-exchanged molecular sieves, increased by several factors of magnitude compared with the case when a nonthermal plasma process was exclusively used. Measurements of emission spectrum from the nonthermal plasma reactors packed with different types of catalyst beads showed that densities and energy levels of energetic electrons were significantly different depending on the types of the packed catalyst beads. However, these different plasma conditions did not affect the removal rates of hydrocarbons as much as the heterogeneous chemical reactions of the catalysts induced by nonthermal plasma.
