Abstract

Several applications of laser diagnostic techniques to visualize combustion phenomena are presented, including reactive Mie scattering for flow, Rayleigh and Raman spectroscopy for major species, laser-induced fluorescence for minor species, and laser extinction, scattering, and laser-induced incandescence for soot. These techniques have been applied to diffusion flame oscillation, a recirculation zone in a burner, laminar and turbulent lifted flames, flame propagation along a vortex tube, and soot zone characteristics, to demonstrate the usefulness of the techniques to provide a better understanding of physical mechanisms.
