Abstract

Selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene into phenylhydroxylamine was studied in a batch reactor on silica supported metallic catalysts (M/SiO2, M=Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir), in neutral aqueous media without additives. It was found that selectivities close to 90% could be obtained at 80% conversion and yield as high as 80% was achieved at 100% conversion, using Pt/SiO2 catalyst working at 5°C, under 20 bar of hydrogen. The mechanism of the reaction was investigated and it was proposed that the reaction proceed via a M-O-N(H)-Ph adsorbed species, by competitive hydrogenolysis of both the M-O and the N-O bonds, leading respectively to Ph-NH-OH and Ph-NH2
