Abstract

The fifth generation (5G) Wireless Communication systems development has brought out a paradigm shift using advanced technologies e.g., softwarization, virtualization, Massive MIMO, ultra-densification and introduction of new frequency bands. However, as the societal needs grow, and to satisfy UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 6G and beyond systems are envisioned. Non- Terrestrial Networks including satellite systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and High-Altitude Platforms (HAPs) provide the best solutions to connect the unconnected, unserved and underserved in remote and rural areas in particular. Over the past few decades, Geo Synchronous Orbits (GSO) satellite systems have been deployed to support broadband services, backhauling, Disaster Recovery and Continuity of Operations (DR-COOP) and emergency services. Recently, there is a considerable renewed interest in planning and developing non-GSO satellite systems. Within the next few years several thousands of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and mega LEO constellations will be ready to provide global Internet services. This report is the 2022 Edition of the INGR Satellite Working Group Report, subsequent to the previous two editions [1] [2]. The topics considered in this INGR Satellite WG 2022 Edition of the roadmap are the following taking 6G systems into account: applications and services, reference architectures (both backhaul and direct access), satellite loT, mm Wave use for satellite networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence, edge computing, QoS/QoE, security, network management and standardization. The work on the roadmap will continue towards the next edition of the roadmap addressing new challenges and potential solutions for future networks.

Dr. Paresh Saxena is an Assistant Professor in the Dpt. of Computer Science & Information Systems, BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad, India. He is currently leading a project MUT-DROCO (Multipath Networking Testbed for Drone Communications) funded by DST-SERB, Govt. of India and a project NANCY (Neural Adaptive Network Coding for video transmission over wireless networks) funded by TCS, India. Previously, he has been involved as a work package leader in two European Space Agency (ESA) funded projects: SatNetCode and HENCSAT, along with a work package member in European H2020 funded project Geo-Vision. He was a member of European COST action IC1104 from 2013–2016 and worked on the project funded by MITACS, Canada in 2008. He has been a visiting researcher in SFU, Vancouver, Canada in 2008 and Telecom ParisTech, Paris in 2010. During his Ph.D. from UAB, Barcelona, Spain, he was awarded UAB Doctoral Fellowship Grant (P.I.F) from 2011–2015. Post-PhD, he was fortunate to spend a few years at AnsuR Tech., Oslo, Norway as a Senior researcher from 2015– 2018. His primary research focus is on the design and implementation of reliable and robust data transfer protocols for terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks.

She is associated with various scientific/professional societies such as Fellow of IETE, life Member of Indian Science Congress, Life Member, Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), & member of International Association of Engineers, (IAENG). She has produced 25 Ph.Ds. Currently, 5 students are working for their doctoral work under her supervision in the areas of wireless sensor & Ad-hoc networks (Aircraft Ad-hoc Network). She currently serves as member of Editorial board of various scientific journals, member of organizing committee of various national/international conferences. She is a member of expert committee of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) & NAAC. She has been an expert for the Evaluation of research (Ph.D.) thesis of various Indian Universities. She is a recipient of Young Professional Award by Govt. of Telangana, IBM Mentor Award, Certificate of Appreciation from Texas Instruments, Certificate of Excellence in Education, Digital Seal from Institute of women of Aviation Worldwide[iWOAW], Global Education Excellence Awards, 2017, “Most Innovative Female Teacher of Electronics and Telecommunications in Rajasthan” by Prime time news channel.

Dr. Joan Bas received the M.Sc and PhD (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 1998 and 2004 respectively. During the pursuit of his PhD, he was recipient of a 1998-2000 fellowship of the UPC’s Communication Signal Processing Group, and a 2000-2004 PhD scholarship granted by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. In March 2005 he joined to the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) as a postdoctoral researcher. In 2008 he was granted with a Leonardo Torres Quevedo fellowship from the Spanish Government to join CTTC as a permanent staff. Currently he holds at CTTC the position of Research Associate in the Space and Resilient Communication Systems (SRCOM) department. He has published +40 conference papers, journal papers, a book chapter, supervised Msc. and post-doc students, participated in +30 research projects, and +10 technological transfer ones. He is also serving as a reviewer of +15 journals. He has also participated in the organization of national and international conferences (e.g. ICASSP2020, GLOBECOM2021, Satellite Workshop on ICC 2022). His main research areas of interest are: the improvement of the spectral and energy efficiency of satellite communications, indoor monitoring, optical wireless communications and its integration with RF systems, security on IoT systems and the design of integrated 6G Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks. He has coordinated the physical layer activities for the second and third satellite roadmap of the IEEE International Network Generations Roadmap (INGR) from IEE Future Networks Society.
