Abstract

In India, carrying out cost-effective, optimum blasts with due considerations to environmental aspects is becoming a necessity in many opencast projects today. This article discusses the advantages of using Raydet-shock tube based initiation system and reviews research carried out on release of explosive in the drillhole, effect of stemming retention and advantages of 'true bottom hole initiation' of drillholes in surface blasting. Several case studies are also presented.
