Abstract

Due to the apparent lack of polymerizability of 5 or 6-membered ring carbonates, the authors became interested in the synthesis of polymeric structures which would contain the corresponding building blocks as it was expected that such suitably designed polymers might depolymerize readily under appropriate conditions in a thermodynamically driven process derived from an equilibrium such as that outlined in this paper. The driving force for such a reaction would be the high tendancy of the polymer to undergo multiple chain scissions in order to afford the very stable monomeric cyclic carbonate.
