Abstract
This chapter focuses on five of the marginal seas of the Indian Ocean, namely, the Andaman Sea, the Arabian/Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Aden, the Red Sea, and the Sea of Oman. There is connectivity between the above various basins by exchange flows and eddy processes. Thermohaline exchange is believed to be the primary driving mechanism for the large-scale circulation and strong seasonal variations in wind strength and moisture fluxes, which remain largely unresolved. The physical and oceanographic settings, the biogeochemical processes, and the biology of the marine environment of each of the above seas are described. The chapter highlights the gaps in our knowledge and suggests directions where future research could be rewarding.
