Prototype of the monitor was developed for measuring tcPCO(2) based on infrared spectrophotometric technique. The measuring prototype consisted of PbSe infrared optical sensor for transcutaneous CO2 measurements, IR fiber and tcPCO(2) analyzer. We conclude that the use of an optical CO2 sensor for the monitoring of cutaneous blood gas continuously and non-invasively appear as possible. Its measuring performance is better than the commercial cutaneous blood gas monitor designed on electro-chemical basis. Monitoring of PCO(2) by a new skin surface sensor has found to be of aid in several clinical situation such as critical care of adults/newborns, surgical operation and exercise testing. Continued clinical studies and increased experience with the method of cutaneous blood gas monitor should lead to further valuable applications.
