Abstract
We have recently proposed a unified description of linear and nonlinear polarization in organic polymethine dyes. In particular, we have established the relationship among the linear polarizability, α, second-order polarizability, β, and third-order polarizability, γ, and the structure of the conjugated molecule (the structural parameter of choice being the bond-length alternation, BLA, or the π-electron bond-order alternation, BOA). In the present work, we show that these relationships, previously determined at the static limit, hold perfectly when the frequency dependence is considered.
