title = "New concepts of mass sensors based on nonlinear dynamic principles",
abstract = "We present modeling, analysis, and experimental investigation for new classes of mass sensors based on nonlinear dynamic principles. The first device that is explored is a switch that is triggered by the detection of mass. This device has the potential of serving as a smart switch that combines the functions of two devices: a sensitive gas/mass sensor and an electro-mechanical switch. The switch can send a strong electrical signal as a sign of mass detection, which can be used to actuate an alarming system or to activate a defensive or a security system. The second explored device is a mass sensor that amplifies its response upon the detection of mass. This amplified response makes the sensor more sensitive and its signal easier to be measured. Both types of sensors will be shown to be very promising to improve the sensitivity of mass detection for bio and chemical applications. Simulation results will be presented for a cantilever microbeam to demonstrate the principle of operation of the new mass sensors. These results are obtained by long-time integration for the equation of motion of a reduced-order model. Then, experimental data will be shown for a capacitive sensor employing cantilever beams with a proof mass at the tip.",
