Abstract

New membrane concepts are discussed that are on the wave of industrial realization. New processes and facilities are surveyed that are equipped with membranes developed at the GKSS research center. The development of hybrid materials made of organic polymers and nano-scale inorganic components for use as membrane materials is surveyed. The survey closes with a description of the newest developments in the field of carbon molecular sieve membranes. In recent years, gas permeation has become established as a suitable process for applications in the chemical and petrochemical industries. Organic vapors for example can be recovered using gas permeation such as the recovery of gasoline from storage tanks. Membranes for use at higher pressures have also been developed. Gas permeation is today suitable for use in recovery of hydrocarbons such as BTX and fluorochlorinated hydrocarbons; for gas conditioning, for example, water vapor-dew point adjustment, methane number increase, natural gas drying; and propylene recovery. These applications are discussed.
