Abstract

Our knowledge regarding the ecology of microorganisms in natural environments has long been limited by an almost total reltaitee on classical cultivation based techniques. However, recent advances in molecular biology techniques, together with ongoing developments in information/computer technologies, have transformed studies on Microbial Ecology and opened a new field, often referred to as 'Molecular Microbial Ecology'. Currendy, studies on natural microbial communities are possible even without the necessity of cultivation ami new molecular strategies have been developed that allow improvements on gene expression studies as well as on understanding the interactions among microbial communities some of the main and/or newest approaches are discussed in this review.
