Abstract

This article provides a thorough review on membrane fouling with particular emphasis on biofouling. The biofouling problems with its mechanism, and existing biofouling measurement methods and their shortcomings are presented. A newly developed biofouling potential measurement method (assimilable organic carbon) is also introduced. Various organic compounds (the precursor of biofouling) present in seawater together with their characterization methods are reviewed. Conventional and alternative pretreatment methods to reduce the organic and biofouling are discussed in detail.
