Abstract

The experimental results on the patterns arising when cylindrical gels shrink were reproduced theoretically using a simple elastic model and an extension of the Flory free energy of gels. As an extension to this work, pattern formation when a gel membrane undergoes a shrinking transition. These preliminary results showed patterns similar to the crumpling of elastic sheets.
