Abstract

A novel unsymmetrically substituted phthalocyanine, which contains an extended planar core and a pair of adjacent peripheral hydroxyl groups is synthesised and used to prepare planar phthalocyanine oligomers. These materials act as macrodiscotic liquid crystals giving a columnar mesophase, which is stable over a large temperature range.
