Abstract
Thin film polymerization technique was used to investigate the kinetics of uncatalyzed and catalyzed polycondensation reaction for thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers (LCP) with the composition of 73/27 P(OBA/ONA). Through in-situ observation from a polarizing microscope, the polycondensation reaction was found to start from a homogeneous to a heterogeneous phase. The reaction rate constant measured from the thin film polymerization is much higher than the previous value obtained from bulk polymerization reaction because the release of acetic acid in the present system is much easier and quicker.
