Abstract

A laser technique, developed for detecting the air/fuel mixture in the combustion process as a method for improving cycle-by-cycle variations in an homogeneous charge compression and ignition (HCCI) engines, is discussed. The HCCI engines allow the lean flammability limit of engine operation to improve fuel consumption and to reduce emissions. The effects of fuel homogeneity on the cycle-by-cycle variation of the IMEP are also analyzed. The results show that the variability between the IMEP cycles with HCCI combustion is influenced more by local concentration heterogeneity than by stratified fuel distribution.
