Abstract

Since thermotropic liquid-crystalline polymers (LCP) consist of rigid backbone molecules, they tend to exhibit liquid-crystalline order in the melt state. As a result, parts with a high degree of molecular orientation can be potentially fabricated by melt processing. This article reports some anomalous flow phenomena during the extrusion of LCP rods and presents the relationship between the initial tensile modulus and the Hermans orientation factor.
