Abstract

Two solar stills were investigated to evaluate its performance under meteorological conditions of Singapore. It was found that the stepped-tray type performed better than the basin type. The basin type has a higher thermal capacity and hence operates at a lower temperature compared to the other. On a sunny day, when the incident total radiation was 17. 57 MJ/m**2, the tilted tray still and the basin type produced 2. 74 kg/m**2 and 2. 07 kg/m**2 respectively. Due to higher thermal capacity, the nocturnal production of the basin type was found to be greater than stepped-tray type.
