Abstract

Alternating para- and meta-linked poly(phenylene-vinylene)s are a potentially interesting class of materials for optoelectronic applications. In a joint experimental and quantum-chemical study, we discuss the influence of the meta-linkage on the conjugation of the system. In the electronic ground state conformation, the conjugation partly extends over the meta-linked phenyl rings. For the lowest electronically excited state molecular geometry, we present evidence for a considerable excited state localization to a chain segment defined by the meta-linkages in the polymeric backbone.
