Acknowledgements: I would like to warmly acknowledge a series of preliminary discussions about the content of the data challenge with members of the scientific and organisation committees of EVA 2021. I am particularly grateful to Ioannis Papastathopoulos (University of Edinburgh) and Raphaël Huser (KAUST), who were co-organisers of this challenge and provided precious advice and logistic support for its organisation. I also address a big thank-you to the Editor-in-Chief of Extremes, Thomas Mikosch, for making this Special Issue possible and for all his guidance during the review process for the published papers. Finally, I would like to point out that organizing this challenge was a real pleasure and a very rewarding experience for me, and I am already looking forward to the next one at EVA 2023, maybe going back to the role of a simple participant of one of the competing teams.
