Abstract
The effect of nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharges on combustion oscillations in a swirl-stabilized combustor is investigated. High-voltage pulses of 10-nanosecond duration and pulse repetition frequencies in the range of 10-50 kHz are applied to a swirling premixed flame with different electrode configurations. The plasma discharges are found to have a strong effect on the pressure pulsations associated with thermoacoustic dynamics, while consuming less than one percent of the thermal power of the flame. Steady pulsed discharges are considered as well as a feedback control scheme. Application of the plasma in steady mode affects the stabilization location of the flame. In conditions where the system is unstable without plasma, a significant reduction of the oscillation amplitude can be obtained through the application of steadily pulsed discharges. Feedback control is implemented as a phase-shift scheme. A strong dependence of the oscillation level on the control phase-shift proves that the proposed plasma actuation concept is able to interfere dynamically with the combustor oscillations.
