Contributions to the computation of compressible turbulence

We present an overview of a portion of the compressible turbulence program associated with the ASCI sponsored Center for Simulation of Dynamic Response of Materials. The role of modeling for large-eddy simulation (LES) in connection with compressible turbulence phenomena associated with the overarching application of the center-a virtual high energy shock tube-is described. The goal is to incorporate into the virtual facility the capability for high-order simulations of shock initiated turbulence associated with both Richtmyer-Meshkov and Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. We also describe 2563 direct numerical simulations (DNS) of decaying compressible, isotropic turbulence at fluctuation Mach numbers of Mt ~ 0.5 and at Taylor Reynolds numbers Reλ = 0(100). Comparisons of the decay of the turbulent kinetic energy obtained from the DNS with LES results at 323 resolution using two different subgrid scale (SGS) models are presented, and the effect of the order of the Pade-based scheme used on the model performance is discussed. Finally, detailed computations of the three-dimensional Richtmyer-Meshkov instability carried out with a finite-volume method on a massively parallel computer are described. These include the reshock phase following shock reflection from a plane wall.
