Abstract
General conditions are derived for an optimal multi-bed adiabatic converter with cold-shot cooling. The problem is solved with and without inequality constraints on the temperature of each bed. A numerical method is presented which quickly establishes the optimum working conditions of the converter. The computational problems arising in the optimization of ammonia quench converters and their solutions are described. Results using both the modified Benton equation and the Temkin-Pyzhev equation are given.
