Abstract
Composite cathodes were investigated for application in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) based on ceramic proton conducting electrolytes. Composite cathodes were made combining a mixed protonic/electronic conductor phase, BaCe0.9Yb0.1,O 3-delta; (1OYbBC), and a mixed oxygen-ion/electronic conductor. La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.803 (LSCF). Area specific resistance (ASR) measurements were performed in wet air for LSCF/1OYbBC composite cathodes, changing the weight ratio between the solid phases, the particle size and the sintering procedure. For comparison, the ASR of single phase LSCF cathode was studied in the same conditions. The lowest ASR values were obtained from the LSCF/1OYbBC composite cathode prepared using nanometre particle powder of 1OYbBC and sub-micrometer particle powder of LSCF in a 1:1 weight ratio and sintered at 1100°C. Fuel cell polarization curves demonstrated superior performance of the LSCF/1OYbBC(l :1) cathode with respect to Pt.
