Abstract

Drinking water in the Dusseldorf supply area is supplemented with chlorine dioxide in order to ensure constant water quality throughout the distribution system. As a result of the rising public concern about eventual byproducts, a reduction of disinfection dosage is frequently discussed. However a switch to a disinfectant-free supply should only occur is negative effects can be ruled out. Therefore the Stadtwerke Dusseldorf have started a research project which focuses on the biostability of the drinking water and biofilm formation in the distribution system.
