N2 - The extreme conditions of Antarctic environment are fundamental to select those organisms able to survive and colonize this habitat. In such unique environment, the rhizosphere effect of the only two native vascular plants found, Deschampsia antarctica Desv (Poaceae) and Colobanthus quitensis (Kunth) BartI (Caryophyllaceae), was evaluated using different molecular approaches. There is a peculiar and diverse profile of bacterial phyla distribution in Antarctic soils, which are mainly selected by the harsh conditions of this environment, but this preselected community can be influenced by the D. antarctica and C. quitensis rhizospheres. © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
