Abstract

An engine that uses detonation for generating energy includes a housing (300); an inlet (306) configured to inject a fuel mixture (304) into an ignition region (320) of the housing (300), the inlet being attached to the housing (300); an ignitor (324) located in the ignition region (320) and configured to ignite the fuel mixture (304); a deflagration to detonation, DDT, region (330) in fluid communication and downstream from the ignition region (320); a pair of electrodes (362) located in the DDT region (330) and configured to apply nanosecond repetitive voltage pulses to the DDT region (330); and a detonation region (340), within the housing (300), in fluid communication and downstream from the DDT region (330). The nanosecond repetitive voltage pulses generate a non-thermal plasma that transition a combustion front propagation through the housing (300) from a deflagration mode to a detonation mode.
