Profile Information

CBE offers its students opportunities to develop real-world solutions to global challenges by leveraging basic discoveries in chemical and biological sciences. These include the development of new processes for gas and liquid separations, water desalination, as well as the development of new materials for reducing greenhouse gases and remediating chemical and biological threats.

CBE offers two tracks:

Advanced Chemical Engineering

Advanced Biological Engineering

CBE Curriculum objectives

CBE students are expected to gain the following knowledge during their graduate studies:
  • Key fundamental knowledge in chemical and biological science through core course studies.
  • Interdisciplinary knowledge in engineering mathematics, material science and engineering.
  • environmental science and engineering, green and sustainable processes, etc. through elective course studies. 
  • Technical and professional problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to define the frontiers of research topics in chemical and biological engineering and the ability to perform independent research through rigorous and thesis research of a high-standard.

CBE Research Objectives

Research activities in CBE aim to reach the following goals:
  • Focus on research and development of innovative chemical and biological processes in the four KAUST strategic research areas of energy, water, environment and food.
  • Focus on research and development of new solutions in challenging but important issues to the Kingdom and to the world, such as natural gas separations, seawater desalination, CO2 capture, clean combustion processes, etc.
  • Develop novel processes that may have large impact to the economy of the Kingdom, such as processes that have strong link to the natural resources of the Kingdom.
  • Important fundamental issues in chemical and biological science, such as separation mechanism of membrane processes, transport mechanisms in porous media, kinetics of combustion processes, etc.
